Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown

Green Day released American Idiot just short of five years ago, to rave reviews in the press but mixed reviews amongst life long fans. It obviously shot them to the highest point in the career and regardless of their changes in sound and character, it had some belting tunes on it.

So now 21st Century Breakdown has dropped and everyone is expecting 'American Idiot Part 2' but in reality is that what it is? The beginning of the album would certainly have you believe so, with the almost pointless opener 'Song Of The Century' followed by the 5 minute long title track picking up where the last record left off. In fact it's only when you get to 'Before The Labotomy' five tracks in that you start to realise it's so much more than a part two, to anything they've previously released.

I think it would be over stepping the mark to claim it's a solid release right though, but for me it has so much appeal throughout. Green Day sound like they're genuinely having fun again, and they may not necessarily be back to where they once were lyrically (and by this I don't mean on quality, simply subject-wise), but musically they've hinted at the Green Day of old once again. I believe this album is most definitely a grower, and every listen will gradually have you remember just why this band are so great. I think this one will have more lasting power than American Idiot did, and I certainly think it has the ability to win some older fans back. I really think you'd have to be stubborn as hell to not admit, this release is littered with really great songs. This record is a perfectly good sign that Green Day's talent in writing and performing songs won't be diminishing any time soon.

Our Overall Rating: 8.5/10
