Just as I got my second pint in at the Camden Roundhouse's bar, Flobots could be heard starting their set, met with cheers from about half of the onlookers in the room. I quickly entered the auditorium to witness a very energetic band bouncing around the stage, to a surprisingly heavy sound. The band were doing a good job of keeping everyone's attention, seemingly borrowing their sound from a variety of influences such as Rage Against The Machine, Linkin park and Outcast. However, as the their set pushed on past three or four songs, a lot of the audience's attentions were starting to wander, including mine. I feel the sound started to thin out, gradually deteriorating the more they played. They kept their energetic on stage presence, but it no longer fitted with the music, almost like they were fighting to keep the attention of the room with body movement rather than song. The set finished on an obvious high, when they played their hit single 'Handlebars', which is probably the only song around 70% of the onlookers actually knew.
So it was back to the bar and a 40 minute wait, for a band I have seen on a few occasions, but never before headlining - Rise Against. Starting their set with 'Drones' was a good choice, and it was rather obvious we were in for a great show from the get-go. The set list, heavily featured songs from their most recent two studio albums, whilst picking a few of the best from the others. This may have disappointed older fans of the band, but it was clear that the majority in the room were lapping up every second of the song choices. It was Rise Against's biggest headline show in London ever and I would fail to see how anyone in the room wasn't enjoying it. The band maintained a musically tight sound throughout and transferred the energy from their albums, straight to their live show that night without missing a single joule.
Finishing the set with an encore fit for kings, the band left me wanting more, and have me itching to see them live again as soon as possible. I left it far too long to see Rise Against headline, and I urge you not to make the same mistake.
